Upstairs card room, strictly 18+

Casino events,
dealt at our tables

On top of the regular Thursday-to-Saturday poker nights we run a small calendar of bigger evenings: a weekly freezeout, a monthly charity game, a seasonal whisky pairing and the winter league final. All of it happens in the card room above the grill, face to face.

01 / The rhythm of the year

A standing game, plus four we make a fuss of

When we opened the card room back in 2019 it was one folding table and a borrowed shoe of chips. Now the year has a proper shape to it. The Freezeout runs every Friday, Steam & Aces lands the first Saturday of each month, Whisky & Cards shows up when the season turns, and late in winter the league gets settled over one long night.

Every event still seats the same three tables upstairs, so even our biggest evenings stay small. Dinner service runs below the whole time. Most people eat first, then take the stairs.

  • Event nights book out faster than a normal week. Reserve a seat, don't count on a walk-in
  • Social poker format at every game: chips on the house, bragging rights kept
  • New faces get a rundown from the caller before the first deal

The longer version of how a grain store grew a card room lives on our about page.

Four nights, four moods

Same three tables and the same caller's voice, very different evenings. Pick the one that fits, or work through all four the way most of our regulars have.

The Freezeout

Our standing weekly game of freezeout poker. Everyone starts level on chips and nobody buys back in, so when your stack goes you're on the rail with a drink and an opinion. It runs brisk and is usually done by eleven, with dinner carrying on below the whole time.

Book ahead or come early. Regulars fill it fast.

Steam & Aces

Once a month we deal poker for something bigger than the pot. The room picks a local cause (the food bank, the harbour cleanup, raffle prizes for the school) and what gets collected on the night goes straight to it. Oamaru's steampunk crowd turns up in full brass and goggles, which tells you the tone: loud, kind, a bit theatrical.

Donations are whatever you want to give. Dress-up encouraged.

Whisky & Cards

The slow one. The bar picks three pours to sit alongside a long dealer's-choice game, and the pace matches the glass. Nobody's hurrying, the hands stretch out, and the talk between deals runs as long as the play. We run it when the weather turns and again at midsummer.

Tell the bar you're seated for the game and pours arrive between hands.

The League Final

All season, placings on the regular nights feed the chalk board by the stairs. Come August the top finishers take a single table and play it out while the rest of the room rails, eats and heckles from a safe distance. The winner's name goes on a brass plate that lives behind the bar till next year.

Qualified? Your seat's held. Everyone else, come rail.

03 / How it runs

What an event night actually looks like

People picture a poker evening as six silent hours of staring at cards. Ours has dinner in the middle of it and a caller who keeps things moving.

If you're only coming for the food, the dining room downstairs runs its normal service while the poker happens above you.

5:00pm

Kitchen opens

Get in early for a plate if you like. A game on a full stomach plays better.

6:45pm

Seats drawn

Booked names go in, seats get pulled from a hat. First-timers get parked near the caller.

7:00pm

First deal

Cards up. The caller explains the night's poker format before a single chip moves.

8:30pm-ish

The break

Fifteen minutes for dessert, coffee or a top-up from the bar while the tables reset.

10:30pm

Kitchen closes, cards stay out

The grill winds down for the night. The game plays on till the last hand lands.

Late

Count-up and the board

Stacks get counted, the result goes on the board, and the winner buys a round if they've got any manners.

05 / Small room, full calendar

The whole card room is three tables and a chalk board, which is why event nights feel like a club night even when half the room walked in off the street.

What people say after the last hand

Came down from Dunedin for the Freezeout with two mates who take their cards way too seriously. Lost my stack by nine, stayed till close anyway — the rail's half the fun and the lamb was still coming out of the kitchen. Booked the next Friday before we left.

Marcus T.Dunedin, Freezeout regular-ish

Steam & Aces raised money for the food bank and I finally learned what a river card does. Solid Saturday.

Whisky & Cards is the one night a year I beat my brother-in-law at poker. Worth the wait.

House rules, plainly put

We'd rather be upfront than have you find out at the door. These apply to every event on this page, no exceptions.

Please note: the card room is strictly 18+ and we check ID. All poker at Joyful Day Out is social, played in person and venue-based. We are not an online casino or betting platform, and our games never move online. Play within your limits. A good night is the whole point.

If the fun's gone out of it: the Gambling Helpline on 0800 654 655 is free, confidential and open every day. Or grab me at the bar for a quiet word. I'd rather you tell me than the table.

The fine print version lives on our terms page if you want the long read.

Bring ID

Anyone who looks under 25 gets asked. No ID, no seat, even for regulars' grandkids.

Chips stay social

Games run for bragging rights and a name on the chalk board. Nothing more rides on it.

Know your stop

Set yourself a number before the first deal and stick to it. We'll happily remind you.

08 / Before you book

Asked about the events

The short version: come hungry, bring ID, and if it's an event night, book ahead. Anything else is probably covered below.

No. Tell the caller you're new and they'll walk the table through the format before the first deal. The Freezeout and Steam & Aces both get beginners most weeks, and Whisky & Cards moves slowly enough that it's the friendliest place to learn.

No buy-in, no rake. It's a social format and the chips are on the house. Steam & Aces runs on donations to the night's cause, and what you put in is your call. The only money changing hands is between you and the kitchen or the bar.

Yes, the rail's a real thing. People come for dinner and drift upstairs to watch the last hour all the time. On Freezeout Fridays the rail usually does more arguing than the table.

No, though most people do. The kitchen runs till 10:30pm and the bar pours later, so food and drink are part of the night either way. Check the dining page for what's on.

Birthdays, work dos, club nights: yes. Three tables, the caller, catering from downstairs. Dates go quickly around winter, so talk to us on the contacts page and we'll sort a format.

Placings on regular and event nights feed the chalk board by the stairs. Whoever's top of the table in late winter qualifies for the final. Your standing's on the board, and the poker page explains the regular poker nights that feed it.
09 / Save your seat

Pick a night. We'll keep the felt warm.

Event seats move quicker than a regular Thursday, so give us a heads-up. Ring +64 3 366 2941 or write to joyfuldayout@gmail.com. Tell us which night and how many of you there are.
